Capital spreads sunscreen from parks

In the summer of 2022, sun lovers were able to use sunscreen free of charge at three locations in Luxembourg -Stadt -in the park of Merl, in the skate park in the Petruss and at the Kinnekswiss. The offer was part of a joint project by the city of Luxembourg and the Fondation Cancer. But the protection did not last long: In the summer 2023 and 2024, the yellow donors had disappeared again.

In a meeting of the local council, councilor Christa Brömmel (Déi Gréng) asked about the remaining the donors. She pointed out that the Fondation Cancer had again put up sunscreens in cooperation with other communities. Protection against UV radiation is particularly important on playgrounds, she emphasized.

Sunscreen on house facades – not on the skin

On the other hand, first lay judge Maurice Bauer (CSV) said that the original initiative did not achieve the desired effect. « The sunscreen landed in many places – rarely on the skin of the people, » said Bauer. Even if there was only a few vandalism, the overall record is sobering. The Hygiène service of the capital has partly discovered large quantities of sunscreen on house facades in Merl.

In addition, there were technical problems: the donors did not work reliably at times. In addition, the question of durability – and hygiene – arose of the cream when it is exposed to the blazing sun for days, sometimes for weeks.
According to Bauer, an alternative could be in an increased cooperation with the Fondation Cancer: Prevention work directly on site – for example by fondation employees – is a conceivable model for the future.
