Canada’s Premier announces new election for April 28th

In the middle of the turbulent trade war with the United States, Canada is to choose a new prime minister. Prime Minister Mark Carney called early elections for April 28th. Then the boss of the liberals competes against the conservative Pierre Poilievre.

The new election in the G7 country had emerged: Trudeau and its liberals lost from support for weak economy and increasing prices. Trudeau stepped back, handed over to Mark Carney and came before a vote of no confidence. Experts see the attempt to use the momentum in conflict with the United States.

Trump’s pressure gave the liberal surprising upswing. Carney is ahead in surveys. In the face of Trump, many of the 41 million Canadians move together.

The parties have a good month to convince those elected. The top candidates of all camps are as an anti-trump, but Poilievre is more difficult: his style is reminiscent of Trump, also his agenda-low taxes, cuts in the state budget, criticism of fake news and woker ideology. That worked as long as Trudeau’s politics was unpopular and Trump did not scare. But now its course strengthens the liberals again. According to surveys, many Carney are most likely to trust to record it with Trump.

Carney is considered a crisis test, albeit without government experience: During the financial crisis, he led Canada’s central bank, later the Bank of England during the Brexit. Most recently, he was a UN special envelope for climate protection. He advertises closer cooperation with Europe and Asia to reduce US dependency. His start of office was strong. Whether he is going through the hard election campaign remains open – his limited charisma is considered a weakness.
