Can the average Greek vacation in Greece?
The summer It is already for good, summer licenses are on the front and the search for destinations, accommodation and tickets has entered its final line. None of this, of course, not even waiting for a few relaxed days away from everyday life, does not limit the anxiety about how high the cost of the holidays will be. Why, in spite of the declarations of the economy (the indicators) of the economy, « Can the average Greek vacation in his country in the summer of 2025? » It is still a completely real and at all rhetorical question.
In search of an answer to this, « TA NEWS » conducted a survey in which they recorded the prices of ferry tickets for the most popular and the least « known » destinations. At the same time, they gathered data on rates per night in rented rooms, hotels and short -term real estate – necessarily excluding luxury accommodation and « debt », ending at an average price per destination.
In the context of the survey, hoteliers and other accommodation owners, travel agents and businessmen on the Greek islands and in land destinations are speaking, giving the most accurate assessment of the budget that the average Greek must have to enjoy in his dignified vacation. To conclude once again that for hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens this remains a … summer night’s dream – especially for those who target one of our beautiful islands.
Can the average Greek vacation in Greece?
Specifically, with regard to ferry transport, according to official figures of the fare price observatory, as recorded by the Ministry of Maritime and Island Policy, ticket prices as formed until May 2025 are significantly uploaded to the same period in 2024. Connections at 15 marks an upward change in prices, while 17 of them remain constant compared to last year and only 6 have a slight decline.
According to the « NEW » tourist agents, rising prices on ship tickets-despite recently announced measures-reached 10% -15% and is mainly due to the implementation of the new EU regulatory framework to reduce carbon and sulfur emissions in the Mediterranean. As the research is evidenced, these are values that will make the average Greek think two or three times how much money he will spend and where – and, of course, if.
Indicatively, for a couple to travel a car to the Cyclades, they must have from 455 to 557 euros on average or over 250 euros per person. Therefore, for a 4 -member family by car the cost is from 488 to 672 euros, that is, some 290 euros per person. For Crete, too, a couple in a car should allocate from 486 to 550 euros on average or 259 euros per person for their ferry, while the four -member family from 584 to 667 euros on average.
As for a car trip to the Eastern Aegean or the Dodecanese, a couple should allocate from 460 to 648 euros for moving or 277 euros per person, while for a four -member family the corresponding amounts are 518 to 808 euros. Finally, in order to travel a couple or a four -member family by car to an Ionian island, they must allocate an amount of 250 euros or more for the costs of both their movement and the route from Athens and Thessaloniki to the ports of Igoumenitsa and Kyllini.
However, because a Greek summer does not only mean islands, « TA NEWS » record the cost of travel (tolls and gasoline) to and from some of the most popular destinations in mainland Greece. To find that in order to travel a couple or a four -member family by car from Athens or Thessaloniki to (indicative) Pylos, Halkidiki, Pelion or Parga, they are forced to spend from 30 to 190 euros on average – depending on the starting point and the final destination – to cover costs.
The general conclusion drawn from the data we have gathered and the reductions we made, then, is that this year’s holiday for the average Greek are not particularly affordable, especially if the cost is compared to the average salaries. Increases in ferry tickets, coupled with relatively stable but always high accommodation prices per night, launch the cost of summer respite.
