Can Giorgia Meloni affect Trump in EU interest?
Italian Prime Minister Meloni has good relations with President Trump. Now she visits Washington. Can Melon affect his customs policy? And in whose interest? Of the EU or only of Italy?
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was present at President Trump’s inauguration ceremony as the only chair of an EU government. But even before that, she visited Donald Trump in Florida. And now the Italian Prime Minister and post -fascist party leader Fratelli D’Italia visits the US president in Washington again. One topic she wants to talk about is known: fees for EU products Trump wants to decide, but now suspended at the moment. « It is clear that setting new tariffs would have serious consequences for Italian producers. And I am convinced that we must do everything possible to prevent a trade war that would not benefit either the US or Europe. » This is how Meloni said before.
Can Meloni avoid a trade war with the EU?
Melon’s relationship with Trump is considered very good, so its supporters see it as the new strong leader in the EU. But the opposition plot and former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi sees things differently. « The propaganda of the Italian government in recent months has been: » You will see, they will set tariffs for everyone except Italy. » But we’ve seen that this is not the case, says Renzi. « We Europeans are all in the same boat. »
Can Melon, who is so well understood with Trump, prevent a trade war between the EU and the US? Piero Igenazi, a political researcher at the University of Bologna, suspects this. He points out that Melon’s visit to Trump is initially nothing but a courtesy visit. After all, it is not an official negotiating for the entire EU. Although Melon is in close coordination with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as reported by Brussels.
Igenazi believes Melon will mainly represent Italian interests during this visit and perhaps hopes to use her good relationship with Trump to ensure Italy receive preferential treatment. This can turn into a problem, the expert points out. « Melon can be tempted to act alone instead of negotiating with European partners. This would be very difficult for Italy because it would cause a lot of reactions-not only from the EU as a whole, but also by European countries on its own. »
In the EU, Melon is presented as a reliable partner and a obedient European. After all, it needs money from the EU, as Italy’s national debt is huge. And that does not facilitate its balanced action between Trump and the EU. But no matter how the conversation between Trump and Melon will end, the prime minister can resume negotiations shortly after the visit. US Vice President JD Vance comes to Rome for a visit during Easter.
