California’s governor throws trump laws
The governor of California keeps the mobilization of the national guard against demonstrators in his state at the behest of the US President Donald Trump For illegal. The “illegal” procedure of the government without his consent was a “serious violation of the sovereignty of the state”, according to a protest letter that governor Gavin Newsom sent to US defense minister Pete Hegseth and published it on platform X.
The government’s official letter on the use of the National Guard, unlike prescribed, was not sent to the governor’s office – and this had not agreed to use. In addition, the “coordination” mentioned in Trump’s instruction to the Ministry of Defense with the governor of California had never existed. The local security forces are able to cope with the isolated protests themselves, so the use of soldiers is not only unnecessary, but risky.
Newsom’s office therefore called on Pentagon boss Hegseth to take back the command to the National Guard immediately and to « put their soldiers back under the legitimate control of the state of California ».
In the United States, states normally have control over the national guard – a military reserve unit that is part of the US forces. Each state has its own national guard, which can be used in forest fires, hurricanes, floods or unrest inside. It is then under the command of the respective governor. If there is a war or national emergencies, the US President can take command.
