Cabinet wants to shift a new nitrogen goal to 2035

The cabinet wants agriculture, industry and traffic to emit half as much nitrogen in 2035 as is now the case. Insiders in The Hague confirm this to NRC after reporting from De Telegraaf and the Ad. This new goal would replace the current nitrogen goal, which states that in 2030 only half of the nature reserves could come down too much nitrogen.

Minister of Agriculture, Femke Wiersma (BBB), will present on Friday the new nitrogen plans of the cabinet, which Prime Minister Dick Schoof has worked on with a working group of twelve ministers recently. Wednesday reported De Telegraaf, however, already that the cabinet intended to set this new goal.

According to sources of NRC, the 2035 working group would find « more implementable » and « more realistic » than 2030 as a deadline. Earlier this year, the court ruled that the government should achieve the 2030 goal, on pain of a penalty of a maximum of 10 million euros.

Buffer zone

According to the sources, the fact that the deadline will be located at 2035 does not mean that the emissions should not already be reduced now. For example, the cabinet is planning to set a « buffer zone » of 250 meters around nitrogen -sensitive nature reserves. Companies in that zone should make, move, shrink or stop more sustainable.

The province of Gelderland decided in March on its own to set up such a buffer zone, in this case of 500 meters. Inside, nitrogen emissions must be reduced by 60 to 70 percent in 10 years from the province. From a first inventory to turn out That 357 farms in Gelderland are within such a buffer zone.

According to ANP news agency, around 1800 companies would be nationally within 250 meters of a nitrogen -sensitive nature reserve. The cabinet estimates to need around 4 to 7 billion euros to reduce the emissions of those companies. Where that money should come from, according to the sources of NRC, it only becomes clear around Prinsjesdag, when the cabinet presents the Budget Memorandum.
