According to the Minister of Justice, Bulgaria Georgi Georgiew, these institutions operated as the so -called Health centers and offered the elderly « rooms for rent » for around 400 euros per month (about PLN 1,000 700). In fact, they were « horror houses » and their activities were illegal.
The Bulgarian Minister of Justice added that some of the saved people had bound legs and were stuffed with sedatives. Some victims were in a critical condition. 18 people were taken by ambulance to the hospital. All people were dehydrated and malnourished, and some « severe heart failure » was found.
Five people were arrested in connection with the case. In an interview with journalists, the Minister of Justice explained that in recent weeks officials have been trying to check the facilities several times, but encountered resistance from the staff. He described hygiene in these institutions as « terrifying » – unskilled staff gave patients injections, there was no permanent medical care on the spot, and the doctors came only in the event of death.
Georgiew added that the inhabitants did not have access to their phone calls or identity documents. They were told that the phones would be returned to them if relatives call them.
Five people were detained in connection with the case. The minister emphasized that the government is currently conducting extensive controls of nursing homes and hospices to protect people defenseless from fraud.
– These controls are related to ongoing investigations on organized crime, which are victims of defenseless people – explained the Bulgarian Minister of Justice.
The lack of care for the elderly in Bulgaria led to the establishment of illegal centers in the country. International organizations have long been criticizing the poor state of healthcare in Bulgaria, the poorest country in the European Union.
