Brutal arrests in Turkey (video/photo)
More than 400 people participating in the May 1 holidays were arrested on Thursday in Istanbul, where part of the city was blocked to prevent any assembly in the emblematic Taksim Square, an association of lawyers said, AFP reports.
‘The number of arrests that have reached our crisis unit exceeds 400’, said on the X Platform in Istanbul of the Association of Progressist Lawyers (CHD).
AFP journalists attended dozens of arrests in Besiktas and Mecidiyeksiy neighborhoods of the European city, where the police blocked the roads leading to Taksim Square.
Istanbul was the scene of major protests at the end of March, of an unprecedented magnitude in 2013, following the arrest of the mayor of Ekrem Imamoglu, the main rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
