Brussels proposes cancellation of Russian gas

As early as 2027, the EU wants to completely renounce Russian fossil fuels. The European Commission has presented plans to gradually terminate the import of energy from Russia. The main target is Russian gas, as it would be prohibited by the conclusion of new gas supply contracts by the end of the year by the idea of Brussels.

In addition, imports would be prohibited in accordance with the already existing short -term, so -called prompt (spot) contracts. Long -term contracts would be banned by the end of 2027. For companies with contracts that last longer, the reason for their termination will be a higher force.

Member States will also have to prepare a national plan for the gradual completion of Russian supplies.

Unlike coal and oil, which are under sanctions, there is no limit to gas imports in the EU. In 2023, supplies decreased by 70 percent compared to 2021, but again increased last year – natural gas by 26, and liquefied natural gas (UZP) by 12 percent. Last year, the proportion of gas imports from Russia was almost 19 percent.

In Brussels, they warn that smaller gas needs will also be derived from the rise of renewable sources. In the coming years, several UZPs will also be available on the world market, especially from the USA, Canada, Qatar and African countries.

Also muting on Krk

Countries have set a lot of infrastructure for the UZP since 2022, including Croatia in Omišalj na Krk, so its imports can be further enhanced. Import capabilities are 250 billion cubic meters a year, which is more than twice as much as they are importing now.

More gas is also expected to come along other routes, such as Azerbaijan. The import of Russian uranium should also gradually reduce the remaining supplies of Russian oil, which comes from Russia about three percent. The exception to its imports were provided by the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, which do not have direct access to the sea.

« The war in Ukraine brutally revealed the risks of blackmail, economic coercion and price shocks, » said the president Ursula von der leyen. According to her, it is time for Europe to completely interrupt the energy ties with an unreliable supplier. « The energy coming to our continent must not be intended to pay for war aggression against Ukraine, » she noted.

Also European Energy Commissioner Day jørgensen warned that the EU paid Russia for EUR 23 billion last year. “Russia is a threat to all of us. So we have to respond, « he said.

“There have always been good reasons for speeding up an energy transition to efficient and renewable energy solutions. Putin’s energy armaments enhance the need to accelerate the energy transition, to diversify supply and to rely on its own capacity to ensure safe energy supply and stable prices. This is crucial for our industrial competitiveness and well -being of our citizens, « said the European Commission’s executive vice -president for a clean, fair and competitive transition Teresa fish.
