Brussels forces Apple to ensure interoperability with third party systems

The European Commission (CE) imposed a series of measures on the US technology Apple on Wednesday to ensure the interoperability of the iOS iOS and iPad operating system with third party devices.

The decision was taken under the Digital Markets Law (DMA), and the commission considered that third party access to the iPhone and IPAD will increase their market share and widen consumer purchase options.

The measures are intended to improve the connectivity of smartwatches, headphones and televisions with Apple products, which is why Brussels forced the company to improve notifications between them and Wi-Fi calls and allow automatic wireless connections via Bluetooth.

The Commission has also required US technology to communicate more transparently and equitably with competitors who request information and authorizations to ensure the interoperability of their products with iPhone and IPAD.

« Companies operating in the EU, regardless of where they are constituted, must comply with the EU rules, including the Digital Markets Law, with this decision, we are simply applying the law and providing legal certainty to both Apple and programmers, » said the vice president of the European Commission Commission, Teresa Ribera, in a statement.

The decision of the community executive arises after US President Donald Trump threatened the EU with tariffs if it implement restrictive measures against US technological companies.
