British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump have concluded a trade treaty. Trump announced this in the White House on Thursday, he speaks of a « groundbreaking deal ».

It is about the first agreement that the United States have concluded since Trump unleashed a trade war by imposing high import rates on almost all countries in the world – and then partly returning to this. Then Trump promised that many a country would « stand in line » to conclude a bilateral agreement with the US. That has not been possible in recent weeks.

Not only for Trump, but also for starmer, the deal is considered a victory. It is known from Great Britain that the country was very important after the Brexit to bring about a trade treaty with the Americans. Both during the first term of Trump and under the presidency of Joe Biden, London already tried to conclude an agreement.

What the deal looks like is still unclear. It is known, however, that the rate reduction mainly relates to the car and steel industry.

Trump previously announced the agreement on Thursday. « The first of many !!! », he wrote on his own network, Truth Social. At the announcement of the deal in the Oval Office, Trump was accompanied by Peter Mandelson, the British ambassador in the US. Starmer called from the UK. « This is a historic day, » said British Prime Minister by telephone. « There are no two countries with a closer bond than ours. » Starmer thanked Trump for his « leadership. »
