Brazil brings the Amazon to the Stock Exchange – Diepresse.com before the COP30 climate conference Cop30
Brazil wants to prove that the 400 billion trees in the Amazon are worth alive than dead. In order to do this, the host of the next climate conference relies on unusual partners.
The four -lane motorway mills through the Brazilian Amazon to Belém for thirteen kilometers long. On half of the route, partly protected jungle was clearedcriticize environmentalists. But the Avenida Liberdade, the avenue of freedom, arises for a good cause, the Brazilian president, Lula da Silva, claims. It should make it possible to bring around 60,000 people in the Brazilian jungle for the 30th World Climate Conference (COP30) in half a year and to save what can be saved.
The Paris climate agreement is on this year’s cop for the tenth time, but the signs are bad that hosts Brazil will be able to show similarly far -reaching results at the end of the negotiations: In the previous year, the world was for the first time the much more conjured 1.5 degrees than in the period before industrialization. U.S. President Donald Trump with the United States pulled the second largest greenhouse gas emittent from the global climate pack-and the other states also not noticed by particularly increased ambitions. Nevertheless, Lula wants to make the anniversary a success. His plan: Before the world comes to Brazil in the jungle in November, the jungle should be on Wall Street.
Climate protection forest?
The Amazon rainforest is with its estimated 400 billion trees for the CO2-Household of the planet of particular importance. The rainforest also takes up enormous amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as the « lungs of the earth » and thus slowed down the ear heating.

But even the largest forest in the earth is no longer what it used to be. Definiations and forest fires have decimated it, in some parts the rainforest is now a greenhouse gas release and no healing CO2-Schenke more. Similar developments are also available in many other parts of the world. Wherever the forest is struggling, where people, fire and bark beetle damage it, the forest is no longer the reliable climate protector of the past. This is now even true for Austria.
In Brazil, the deforestation of the rainforests increased extremely under the former right -wing populist President Jair Bolsonaro. With his choice, Lula promised a radical change of course and reduced the deforestation by a third in just a few months. In 2024, as little forest was destroyed in Brazil as last nine years ago. By 2030, the Brazilian government’s promise, the deforestation should be completely stopped.
But that is easier said than done. Because the forests do not disappear from pure destructive rage, but because people expect a better life when they clear the jungle and put on plantations there or let cattle graze. 90 percent of all cleared areas in the Amazon were then used as a beef farm.

The country is promoting more environmentally friendly alternatives such as cocoa lantes in the shade of the mighty jungle trees, the collecting of medical plants or ecological tourism to show that the trees can be more worth alive than dead. But for the really big litter to protect the Amazon, Lula does not rely on organic farmers and bird customers, but on fund manager, insurance and banks.
With $ 125 billion on the stock exchange
By the start of the COP30 in November, Brazil plans to launch a $ 125 billion (111 billion euros), which is to finance the protection of the rainforests. The idea behind the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF): Rich countries should give $ 25 billion as start -up capital, and another 100 billion should then come from the private sector. A triple-a rating is sought in order to be able to accept fresh capital at low prices. Once filled, the fund is intended to create the money in high -interest bonds of emerging countries and companies and operate the investors from the returns and pay countries that leave their forests alone.
»Investments instead of donations should save the rainforest. The idea is captivating. Now she just would have to work. »
Germany, France, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore have already indicated that they are available as anchor investors. The World Bank should ultimately manage the fund. In addition to Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia, over 60 other forested states are possible as possible profiteers. The architects of the financing vehicles hope for $ four billion in annual profit, every hectare forest that is not cleared, could be worth about three to four dollars a year. To classify: Brazil currently has almost 320 million hectares of tropical rainforest.
Finances Brazil with deforestation?
So far, the protection of the rainforest has been financed either by state funds or certificate systems, which, however, made hardly any decisive progress. Co2-Wald certificates are considered prone to fraud, the aid in turn only sparsely flow. Not only Donald Trump strokes the funds for international aids, Europe also focuses more on his own defense than protecting the rainforests. The problem is solved by the rainforest fund, said Brazil. Every dollar that is issued for this is not a donation, but an investment.
This is exactly what critics of the idea come about. Lula puts the future of the jungle in the hands of highly volatile financial markets, they say. Who guarantees that this really protects more forest? Who guarantees that profits are not achieved by investments in those companies that drive deforestation? Others are more concerned with whether the fund can put on enough capital to develop its full effect. They do not doubt that new ideas are necessary: a fifth of the Amazon has disappeared in the past hundred years. All help is right to save the green lungs on earth.
