The boy (9) from Waasmunster that was removed from the water of the Provincial Sports and Recreation Domain De Nekker in Mechelen on Friday afternoon is still in a critical condition. The child is from Syria and has only been at the Wase school for a few weeks.

The student of Free Primary School Sint-Franciscus from Waasmunster ended up on Friday afternoon in the Plas of Recreation Domain De Nekker in Mechelen. The missing boy was removed from the water after a search with a human chain and resuscitated more than half an hour. Afterwards, the drowning person was transferred to the Antwerp University Hospital in Edegem in critical condition.

« The investigation into the concrete circumstances of the incident is still ongoing, » says Jurgen Bauwens, mayor of Waasmunster. (CD&V). « On Saturday morning, slight brain activity was diagnosed with the boy, but his state of health is still very criticism. »

According to the mayor, communication with the Syrian family is difficult due to the language barrier. The family would only stay in our country for one month. « The younger brother of the victim was initially taken care of at school and informed about the situation with the help of an interpreter. »

The school also informed the parents of all students through Smartschool on Saturday morning that the state of Fisal (9) is still unchanged. « We sympathize and stay with him and his family in mind, » it sounds.
