A primary school from Waasmunster was on a day trip to the Nekker on Friday. When the supervisors noticed that a nine -year -old boy could be found, an alarm was raised. « I saw how two women, I suspected teachers, were clearly looking for someone. They looked around in full, but it quickly turned out that it was a nine -year -old boy – not and then started to inform the rescuers of the Nekker, » says Francesca Annaert. She was also present in the recreational domain on Friday. « The rescuers then removed everyone from the water. She, the emergency services and also ordinary people have formed a chain and went into the water in this way. Looking for the boy who was missing. »

“A man who was clambered on a kind of platform or delimitation of the swimming pond looked at the water from there and suddenly shouted ‘ICI, ICI’. The man, together with another person, jumped into the water and they brought the boy to the side. Then the resuscitation was immediately started. «

After a resuscitation that was said to take more than half an hour, the ten -year -old boy was transferred to the UZA in Edegem in critical condition. The man who took the child out of the water was in shock, received medical assistance on the spot and was then transferred to the AZ Sint-Maarten.

« In which circumstances the boy ended up in the water is fully investigated, » says Lieselotte Claessens of the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office.

« We are aware. The condition of the child is very criticism. The parents are taken care of at the school, » says Mayor of Waasmunster Jurgen Bauwens.
