Bolsonaro summons demonstration from the hospital

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday called a demonstration for the amnesty of those convicted of a coup attempted on January 8, 2023. The call was made in a message recorded at the hospital where he has been hospitalized for two weeks.

“Peaceful demonstration in Brasilia for the amnesty” on May 7, says the leader of the Brazilian far-right in the video in which he appears in a bed of DF Star hospital with several tubes on his nose and arms.

The demonstration succeeds other acts carried out since the beginning of the year in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, also summoned by Bolsonaro in support of a bill presented in Parliament, which has so far been full support in the two legislative chambers of the country.

The Bill proposes to grant Amnesty to « all those who participated in demonstrations anywhere in the country from October 30, 2022 until the date on which the law comes into force. »

The project would benefit those involved in the attacks on Brasilia on January 8, 2023, when the headquarters of the three powers of the Brazilian state were vandalized and thousands of people camped in front of barracks across the country, demanding a coup d’état.

The attacks took place the day after the 2022 elections, when the current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, defeated Bolsonaro, who was trying to reelection.

Although the former Brazilian president did not clarify in the video, nearby sources ruled on his possibility to attend the demonstration scheduled for May 7, in Brasilia, because he had a delicate gut surgery in mid-April and has not yet fully recovered.

Bolsonaro remains in intensive treatment and, according to the latest medical report, although he is “clinically stable” and presenting “progressive improvement”, remains without high and has restricted visits.
