Boil the Balkans: Corruption and political instability
« The Balkans are burning » could be argued on the basis of what is happening in a number of their countries, from Sarajevo to Skopje and from Belgrade to Bucharest.
In many cases, in fact, it is enough for a reason, which is often a tragic event, to trigger the accumulated explosive material and to massively take the world into the streets.
Where, in addition to the obvious request for punishment of the perpetrators, the demand for overall changes in the corrupt political-economic system is increasingly clear. As is already the case in Serbia and, yesterday, in northern Macedonia.
And what does Europe do in this situation?
« The Western Balkans have long been treated as the field in which Europe is being tested.
Today, the area in which Europe will be redefined could be redefined, ”Arminka Hell, a consultant to former British Foreign Minister William Hague, wrote at Politico.
It could also be right – provided, however, that EU leaders are now facing the region, its states and its peoples in a different way than (as it reminds us of its analysis) the first Chancellor of Germany, before a half century, as it was imprinted in its historical phrase.
It is certain that the way the rest of the Europeans stand for the (more) Balkans leads to the assessment that they probably consider them unnecessary weight.
The constant delay, after all, their process of integrating into the EU proves that they do not want to see them to become full and equal members.
And this is something that, in turn, has caused a crisis of identity and orientation in the elites and societies of most countries in the region, thus expanding and deepening existing faults, creating new ones. Which, as is natural and expected, will seek to cover extra -European forces.
