Bodycams will be with the police in July, Taser next year

From July 1st, police officers will wear bodycams in Luxembourg. Interior Minister Léon Gloden (CSV) and the deputy general director of the police, Alain Engelhardt, confirmed this at a press conference on Wednesday. « There was talk about them for a long time, now they are there, » said Gloden.

The Luxembourg police bought around 1,300 of the small black cameras from the manufacturer Motorola. They are distributed to 33 commissioners. The traffic police and the officers at the airport are also equipped with the devices. Some copies also come to the police school. The price for the project: around 3.2 million euros over five years.

This is how the cameras work

The police are prescribed to carry the cameras, said Engelhardt. The bodycams are worn at the chest height and are constantly drawn up – but without automatically saving. Only when an official presses the recording button or pulls his weapon is the video material saved. The 30 seconds before the trigger are also secured retrospectively. « This results in a good overall picture of the situation, » explains Jeremy Chiodo, project manager at the police.

The recordings end up in the cloud of a German provider and are saved there for 28 days – unless they are needed as part of an investigation. Then they are kept longer.

With the help of the bodycams, both police officers and citizens should be better protected. « The aim is to have fewer violations of police officers, because the cameras have a de -escalating effect, » says Alain Engelhardt in an interview with the « Luxembourg word ». « If there is an incident, we have objective images that show what happened. This enables a more secure and efficient resolution of the case. »

Between 2020 and 2024 there were over 400 cases of rebellion in police operations, and in the same period there were also more than 1,300 cases of insults against civil servants. But citizens should also benefit from the cameras, for example when officials make mistakes in missions. Because investigations against police officers have also achieved a new record last year.

Taser come in 2026

However, the bodycams are only part of a comprehensive modernization of the police. New uniforms are to be presented this year. At the beginning of 2026 the next step follows: The special units of the newly created Groupe de Soutien Opérationnel (GSO) will be equipped for the first time with Tasern. Other police units will initially not receive a taser. « We don’t want to generalize that right away, » said Gloden.
