After a 15-year break, the BMW M5 Touring returns. With an output of 727 hp and a torque of 1000 Newton meters more than ever-but also heavier than an American pick-up.

How do you test the law on the law – or the ability to suffer – a driver? You put it in a car with 727 hp, leave it on a winding route and then impose a speed limit of 70 km/h.

There are supposedly people who adhere to such a speed limit on this remote and overall, less used street. You will probably stay in front of a red pedestrian light at four in the morning.

How do we behave in a car where you can reduce all -wheel drive to a pure rear wheel drive at the push of a button? Let’s say: We drove hard on the speed limit and otherwise refer to paragraph 157 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Again: 727 hp, 1000 Newton meters of torque, a double -charged eight -cylinder engine. These are information that is rarely found on a map of the car quartet today.

We owe you to BMW, which show the M5 what is possible and what you can offer in this series. Respect in times when a competitor in his sports models – snap breathing! -Four-cylinder engines installed (which, admittedly, also does BMW with its smaller M models …).

Such motorization and such a torque only make it possible to electrification. The 4.4-liter observer-cylinder biturbo alone makes a very remarkable 585 hp (750 Nm), but only the electric motor with its 197 HP and 280 NM torque creates the record values.

Faster than an F50

The sprint from the stand at 100 km/h takes place in fleet 3.6 seconds – and if you don’t take your foot from the accelerator in time, you can quickly see values on the country road where the car seizure threatens. Only for comparison: A Ferrari F50 needs 3.9 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h.

The electric motor draws its electricity from an 18.6 kWh battery that should be charged regularly. On the one hand, to have full acceleration. On the other hand, however, in order to be exhausted and silent in the city and to be able to irritate fans, who point out the car, whether the M5 lettering at the back right (in the assumption, only the V8 brings).

In our test we came in a purely electrically over 60 kilometers – gently driven in the city. According to the BMW, you can drive up to 140 km/h electrically, but in the cases certainly not 60 kilometers.

Our M5 was also an exception in a different relationship. It was a touring, a combination, the first in 15 years since the E61 was discontinued. Incidentally, it was and is a very exclusive model: from 2005 to 2010, only 1025 models of the M5 Touring were delivered.

Relaxed driving

The advantage of touring is a loading volume of 500 to 1630 liters. The disadvantage of the combination of two drives and the battery: the weight. The M5 Touring weighs a proud 2.5 tons. Also a comparison: this is more difficult than a Ford F-1550. And that is truly not a small pick-up.

You can feel the consequences when you drive the M5 as you should drive an M model. On a brisk cornering, the touring pushes over the front axle and in tight corners, physics in the form of centrifugal forces are noticeable.

Once you get the brisk M-trip out of the system and for your money (price: from 147,900 euros), you are on the road in a very comfortable, very highly valuable, very powerful combination. We drove away from the excursion over the house route primarily in the « Road » mode, all the systems, especially the adaptive sports suspension, on comfort, switched the excellent Bowers & Wilkins facility a bit louder and enjoyed life, the landscape and the joy of driving.

We received the reward for this at the petrol station: an average consumption of modest 9.4 liters per 100 kilometers. This is undoubtedly a record for this test car.
