Bessent and Chinese civil servant speak of ‘substantial progress’ in commercial interviews between US and China

The US Finance Minister Scott Bessent, and the Chinese Deputy Prime Minister He Lifeng stated on Sunday that « substantial progress » has been made in the trade discussions between the United States and China. Bessent made this statement during a press conference during a press conference, Lifeng later confirmed this to the news agency Reuters.

The conversations that took place in Geneva on Saturday and Sunday were the first serious attempted dialogue between China and the United States since President Donald Trump unleashed a trade war at the beginning of April. The aim of the consultation was to arrive at a (partial) solution for the import duties that both countries have since imposed each other.

Bessent did not yet release any details about possible measures that were taken, but promised to come up with more information on Monday. Lefeng said « to have reached an important agreement. » Trump spoke earlier on Truth Social of a ‘full reset’ in the trade relationship between the two countries.
