Berzins and Klochnik’s Riga Marathon become Latvian Champions in Marathon Distance / Day
In the marathon distance, the fastest in the men’s competition was South African runner Melihaya Thomas Francis, who finished in two hours in 13 minutes and 20 seconds. Second, with six seconds behind, was Nguse Amlosom, a spokesman for Eritrea, while Kenyan Antoni Kipchirchir conceded eight seconds and was third.
Berzins achieved the best result from the Latvians, who defeated the winner for 12 minutes and 20 seconds and ranked ninth.
In the women’s competition, Ajanta Kumela Tadese took the first place, reaching the finish in two hours 28 minutes and 24 seconds and ahead of the closest follower for more than six minutes.
Klachnik was behind the first place with 21 minutes and 54 seconds and was the fastest from Latvia’s runners, taking sixth place. One position below was followed by Elena Prokopchuk, who lost 22 minutes and 36 seconds to the winner.
Meanwhile, the fastest in the half marathon distance, finishing in one minute and 42 seconds, was Ethiopian Abera Mamo. The best of Latvian runners was Edgars Šumskis, who lost to the Ethiist for six minutes and 15 seconds and was sixth in the overall standings.
German Domenika Majere took first place in the women’s competition in the half -marathon, finishing in nine minutes and 50 seconds in the final hour. The fastest among Latvian runners was Ieva Moļņika, who conceded to the German athlete for 12 minutes and 31 seconds and finished seventh.
The marathon has been held in Riga since 1991 and has been gathering tens of thousands of runners from around the world every year in the capital of Latvia.
