Berlin wants to keep border controls and Germany ticket
The future federal government holds on the border controls to the German neighboring countries. « The border controls to all German borders have to be continued, » says CDU, CSU and SPD, presented in Berlin on Wednesday afternoon in Berlin. This should apply until the EU guarantees functioning external boundary protection, which, according to things, is not to be expected in the short to medium term. However, Berlin plans to strengthen the European border protection agency Frontex in border protection and returns.
In addition, the government program, which still has to be confirmed by the parties, speaks a harder gait towards migrants. « In coordination with our European neighbors, we will also make rejections at the common limits in the event of asylum applications, » announced the coalition partners.
Permanent internal European border controls are contrary to European law, but they can be passed by the Member States without the consent of the EU. Therefore, Germany introduced this in September 2024 as a temporary measure. The outgoing interior minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) extended them in March. It can be expected that the future federal government will also extend the supposedly temporary measure every six months.
Planning security over several years
The coalition paper also contains interesting announcements for German cross -border commuters, especially for those who rely on bus or train. The Germany ticket, which is popular with many users of public transport, is also to be continued beyond 2025. From 2029, however, the price is to be increased “gradually and socially acceptable”, says Union and SPD. The parties do not call specific price increases; However, planning security should be guaranteed. Most recently, the price for customers rose to 58 euros per month from 49 euros per month
How the government gives a small scale in front of the German border controls
The paper also contains an announcement that – depending on the tax constellation – could be relevant for some cross -border commuters: « We will increase the commuter flat rate on 01.01.2026 to 38 cents from the first kilometer, » says the paper. This is a full increase compared to the 30 cents currently in Germany.
