Berisha has never invested in new leadership in the DP

Democratic Party MP Ferdinand Xhaferaj has filed strong accusations against DP leader Sali Berisha during a News24 interview after losing May 11 elections.

Xhaferaj stated that Berisha did not invested for a new leadership after the 2013 loss, but supported a leader like Lulzim Basha who, according to him, guaranteed Berisha’s family interests. He accused the former prime minister of interfering with the race between Basha and Olldashi and then was the « guarantor » of Basha’s stance even after losses in 2017 and 2021.

« Berisha built an insincere fable to return to the top of the DP after leaving Basha. He claimed to do it for the party, but in fact his actions served only personal interests, » Xhaferaj said.

Ironizing Berisha’s statements that justice is captured by Rama, Xhaferaj asked: « Who gave the stamp of the Berisha party? If it is justice, then was it not Rama who gave it? »

The Democratic lawmaker also criticized the way the coalition for the election was built, describing it as the « coalition that Edi Rama would like » with Ilir Meta and Fatmir Mediu, instead of a wider opposition union with figures like Agron Shehaj or Adriatik Lapaj.

« The lists were made as Rama wanted. Berisha’s behavior was the one that more profitable Rama, » he said, adding that « Berisha is in a difficult situation today. If he does not claim the elections are stolen, he has to resign. »

Xhaferaj envisaged a reform of the Democratic Party from autumn to spring, pointing out that « there is already a clear pressure for the DP to be in -depth and sincere reform, » BW writes.
