Bergwacht Oberstdorf frees them from a predicament

The Oberstdorf mountain rescue service was called for an unusual effort: a hiker was sitting in the Fiderepass-Hütte in the Allgäuer Alps Fixed and could not go out. How could that happen?

According to the Oberstdorfer Bergwacht, the 23-year-old had made his way to the Fiderepass hut on Monday, April 7, 2025. The protective hut of the Oberstdorf section of the German Alpine Club (DAV) is located on the German-Austrian border near Oberstdorf in the western Allgäu Alps. The hut is also a base for the inspection of the Mindelheimer via ferrata with the transition to the Mindelheimer Hütte.

The hiker wanted to spend the night in the winter room of the Fiderepass hut. The 23-year-old had caught up with the responsible Alpine association section in advance. When the young woman entered the winter room, the door fell behind her – and the grip on the inside broke off.

The woman could no longer leave the hut independently and was stuck. But she was lucky: in the Fiderepass hut she had mobile phone reception and was able to describe her predicament via the emergency call. The integrated control center then alerted the Oberstdorf mountain rescue guard.

So the 23-year-old was freed from the locked hut

In coordination with the police helicopter relay in Bavaria, which was at this time as part of a practice flight with the mountain rescue service in the Oberallgäu, a head of operations at the mountain rescue service was flown to the Fiderepass hut. Even before dark, the emergency services freed the trapped hiker. So that the woman did not connect again in the hut, a helicopter flew her back into the valley.

The Alpine Club section as the operator of the hut has been informed about the defective door handle and will fix the damage promptly. In this context, the Oberstdorf mountain rescue guard points out that mobile phone reception in alpine terrain is not a matter of course. In this case, the hiker was very lucky – without a network, quick help would hardly have been possible.

In addition, the police are currently advising tours to the Allgäu high alps without the corresponding alpine equipment and without knowing any knowledge. Despite the spring -like weather in the valley, there are still wintry conditions in the high areas of the Allgäu Alps.
