Bergqvist wants to see athletes in the national team take the next step

Bergqvist wants to see athletes in the national team take the next step

It has been a puzzle. Two major athletics championships within just under three weeks do not belong to the usual during the indoor season.

– But it's a dear puzzle, says Kajsa Bergqvist.

This year it is about a World Cup that has been postponed three times since the pandemic year 2020 will eventually get rid of Chinese Nanjing. In the calendar there is also the European Championships in the Netherlands. Not many Swedish athletes have chosen to stand in both championships.

– From an athletic perspective, I just think it's fun that there are two opportunities, says Bergqvist.

But the indoor championships In all honor – this year's big athletics event will be first arrived in the autumn, when the World Cup will be arranged in Tokyo.

It does not feel particularly distant, says Kajsa Bergqvist. Planning has been running for a long time.

– It started this spring with meetings with the municipal council in Fukuoka, if we were to be allowed to use the municipality's facilities for our publisher. In this way, it is a work that starts long before. So no, it feels pretty close.

What expectations do you have at 2025 in general?

– I hope we can take another step. We have done many good championships, but there have sometimes been quite a few fourth and fifth places, which could just as well have become medals.

– So it's definitely a goal this year, that we can pick more medals at the championships as well.

On the question of whether there is Some names we should keep an extra eye on the league captain quickly puts in a fireplace. She doesn't want to forget anyone.

One name that, however, immediately appears is Erik Erlandsson.

– Hold the hat! Kajsa Bergqvist exclaims.

– Incredible talent, both physical and the mental, the attitude. What he did at the European Championship last summer when he came in as new in senior context and was on the rocker to take medal. It's sensational. He took giant life last year, and now he takes giant life during this indoor season.

Erik Erlandsson finished four in the European Championship final at 200 meters in Rome last year.

There are several such names, says Bergqvist. Young athletes are on their way up, on their way to establish themselves seriously. Nora Lindahl (also 200 meters) is another mentioned.

– I think it's most fun when I follow athletics as close as I do now, when active takes that step. Suddenly you go into the world elite in what you are doing, says the federation captain.

Is it still the feeling that it bubbles from below after a small gap?

– I hope that during this Olympic bike it will be filled from below.

– Everyone will not take the step up to become medalists at championships, but I think there are enough people there for us to be able to get three, four who may be all the way to be the best in the world, and it feels super inspiring – really.

Medalists at the Athletics World Cup in Paris 2003: Christian Olsson (three steps, gold), Stefan Holm (high jump, silver), Carolina Klüft (sickness, gold), Kajsa Bergqvist (high jump, bronze) and Patrik Klüft (stake jump, bronze).

But the union captain is Also quick to step on and point to the fact that many from the more experienced guard seem to be canceled at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Thobias Montler, Daniel Ståhl, Khaddi Sagnia, Fanny Roos and Perseus Karlström.

– It is not given when you are around 30, and I think that is very important for the younger ones.

Kajsa Bergqvist exemplifies with her own experience as active.

– When my generation ended, it went from taking the most, was there five or seven medals at the World Cup? . It became a very case.

– There I feel good hope in this whole gang that now comes from below.

At the same time it is A ten thousand kroner issue. How do you create such an extremely successful generation again?

– Maybe it was a coincidence, says Kajsa Bergqvist.

– Everyone we came from different environments, and that we arrived at the same time … but some are forgotten there, which ended up in the cloud, despite moving their positions during that period.

Kajsa Bergqvist: “When my generation was at its best, it was not that everyone who started with athletics in that crank took over five years later. It takes ten, fifteen years - and I know it is a pressure to start training athletics, at least in the Stockholm area. I get many emails, which are so: 'Can you do anything? The only thing my son wants is to practice athletics, but it's two years of waiting time. ' If you are ten years old and want to start athletics, that the interest remains when you are twelve ... then you have invested in something else instead.

It was that feeling of being a really good national team, says the league captain. Yes, one of the world's best national teams. That it was fun to go to the World Cup because it was the World Cup – it was not directly the attitude that applied.

– Suddenly it was instead that: « I should curse myself to the semi -finals at least », or whatever it could be. Suddenly, people in the World Cup finals may not have so many headlines because others performed even better, says Bergqvist.

– That's what I want to see, just that more people go in and take this next step.
