Believe in Europe

This week we celebrated two moments loaded with symbolism: May 8, which marks the end of World War II in Europe, and May 9, Europe, when we evoke the historic Schuman statement.

They separate us only 24 hours between war and peace. But it unites us something much deeper: the certainty that even after the darker periods, it is possible to raise a common vision based on freedom, reconciliation and hope.

European construction was born precisely of this courage. From the conviction that, after the war tragedy, it was possible to forge a project that would guarantee peace, promote progress, and protect human dignity. This was the legacy of the founding generation. And that is the inheritance we must preserve.

Being European is more than belonging to a geographical space or having a particular passport. It is, above all, to share an idea. A commitment to the values that define us: freedom, democracy, the rule of law, social justice and solidarity between peoples.

It is also to refuse the normalization of extremisms, populism and hate narratives. To be Europe is believing in the policy that builds bridges, that finds solutions and that puts people at the center of decisions.

Today, being European is facing new challenges with the same spirit of responsibility. It is responding to the complexity of today’s world, without leaving anyone behind. It is betting on sustainable economic growth, where innovation and competitiveness walk side by side with social cohesion. It is also to recognize that security is no longer acquired.

In a more unstable world, with wars at the gates of Europe and increasingly sophisticated hybrid threats, we need a stronger union, more capable of defending its citizens and values.

But above all, being Europe is believing in the future. Believing that we can continue to make Europe a space of freedom and opportunities. A place where each young man has the right to dream and realize these dreams. A continent where progress does not sacrifice the principles and where differences enrich the whole.

This week, in the European Parliament, we had the honor of receiving veterans from World War II. Listening to his story and being part of the legacy of those who fought against totalitarianism was deeply moving. They are the face of history, resistance and courage. They are the living reminder of what is in question when we talk about peace. Your example should continue to inspire us.

On this European day, we are not just a date. We have celebrated an idea that has been uniting us for over seven decades. A promise of peace, cooperation and shared prosperity. A promise that remains alive – as long as there is those who believe.

And I believe. Convincedly. I believe Europe is – and it can continue to be – the best place in the world to live. I believe in a European generation prepared to lead responsibility, ambition and global vision. And I believe that together we will be able to face the challenges with courage and hope.

Because believing in Europe is ultimately believing in ourselves.
