Beautiful memorial to the Children’s Hospital of the Circle
A special book corner was officially opened at the Children’s Hospital on Sunday, June 1st. The book corner is a memorial to the hospital from Gudrun Birna Blöndal’s family, but Guðrún Birna died about a year ago. The opening was held on Guðrún Birna’s birthday, but then she would have turned 16.
In the book corner you will find furniture, books and ornaments in the spirit of Guðrún Birna and the corner is intended to be a pleasant space for children who lie inside the hospital. This is stated on the Facebook post of Landspítali.
Had a love of book reading
In a conversation with mbl.is, Gudrun Birna’s mother, Elín Blöndal, says the book corner is in memory of her daughter, but the family also wanted to do something for the hospital.
« They did so much for us and this was of course our second home for a while, » says Elín, but her daughter was long stay at the children’s hospital during the illness.
Guðrún Birna Blöndal died last year, but the book corner was officially opened on her birthday.

« She was a great bookworm, read a lot and had a lot of beautiful books, » says Elín, but Gudrun Birna’s book interest had attracted some attention inside the hospital.
« She was often chatting about the books with the doctors, nurses and other staff. There was an interest and mood around it, » says Elín, but from there came the idea of giving the children’s hospital books Gudrun Birna.
In the spirit of Gudrun Birna
« We were assigned this corner which was naturally absolutely great and got to decorate it. We did it in collaboration with the Head of Department, Salka. »
The book corner contains books that Guðrún Birna owned, but Elín says she has been exceptionally well with books, such as precious things and looked after them well.
Here you can see a picture of the book corner, but Gudrun Birna’s family wanted it in her spirit, where there are Lego flowers, as Guðrún Birna had put together for her family.
« She knew so well to have it pleasant with the adventure world of the books on hand, it is our hope that children and adults who visit the Children’s Hospital and stay there can find a refuge there and enjoy it as best as possible, » says Elín.
