Beaches on Mallorca full of blue sailing jellyfish – diepresse.com
Mallorcan media write about a « blue spectacle ». A storm flooded the animals in masses.
The storm from the weekend over Mallorca has washed up massive blue sail jellyfish. As the « Mallorca Magazin » and the « última Hora » reported, there was a « blue spectacle » on the beach of Port de Sóller in the west on Saturday.
Just a day later, Port d’Orndatx beach was full of jellyfish in the southwest. The place is particularly popular with rich vacationers. According to the « Mallorca Zeitung », Cala Millor’s beach in the east of Mallorca was already affected in early March.
Contact with blue sailing jellyfish usually harmless
For humans, contact is usually harmless and can only lead to slight skin irritation. Over time, however, the decaying jellyfish exude a violent stench. In fact, almost every year sailing jellyfish are flooded on the island beaches. Spring and autumn are a jellyfish time on the holiday island.
When swimming in the sea, the fire jelly should be careful. When contacted, the skin reduces and itching comes. The jellyfish Portuguese gallery, which can sometimes be fatal for humans, has not been sighted for years. In 2018, a dead specimen was sighted for the first time. (APA/dpa)
