BBC: Sale worth $ 100 billion between the United States and Saudi Arabia
An agreement for Saudi Arabia to buy US weapons and other military equipment worth over $ 100 billion is considered to be among Trump’s deals on his trip to Saudi Arabia, the BBC reports.
It is said that part of the package are missiles, rockets, radar systems and transport aircraft.
The United States has long been a Saudi Arabian weapons supplier, but that link has been disrupted in 2021 when the Biden administration has stopped selling offensive weapons to Riyadh, citing concern for the country’s role in the neighboring Yemen war.
The murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Kasoghi in 2018 was also widely published as a factor – a report by the US Intelligence Service revealed that the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman approved the murder, but Saudi Arabia described it as « false ».
Biden’s White House continued the sale of offensive weapons last year, saying the Saudis stopped bombing Yemen. Some commentators have said the United States is seeking Saudi help to help end the Gaza conflict and help its future reconstruction.
Trump has arrived in Saudi Arabia, where he will start his tour of three bay countries. At the airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh, Trump was solemnly welcomed by Saudi crown prince Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
