15 years in prison: court condemned the accused for murder to taxi drivers

In mid -November 2022, a man in Basel stabbed a taxi driver. Two and a half years later, the accused had to answer to the Basel criminal court. The verdict followed today.

The homicide happened in the Peter-Merian-Strasse in Basel. The accused fled after the crime.

The court is guilty of the accused in the main accusation point of the murder. The 53-year-old has to custody for 15 years and 3 months. To do this, a bus of CHF 150 is imposed on him and he is sentenced to satisfaction payments of a total of CHF 170,000 to the victim’s family. In addition to the prison sentence, the accused is said to receive an enforcement, outpatient psychiatric treatment.

Court president Markus Hofer justifies the judgment. He stops, his voice breaks when he describes the act again at the beginning. « It was very bad … very bad pictures that we looked at. » The accused had brought « incredible suffering » about the victim’s family and an entire professional group, the taxi drivers, « frightened and terror ». He had now had to answer to court for this injustice.

The defendant accepts the judgment silently. He wears a white shirt, black -bordered glasses, blue jeans and white sneakers. His ankles are tied up. An interpreter translates the words of the court president for the widow of the murder victim, which sounds sobbing. Hofer says to the mother of two: “Nothing can bring her husband back to her husband, who was an absolute chance victim. If we could do that, we would do it. »

Court speaks satisfaction for victim family

The public prosecutor advocated murder and demanded a prison sentence of 16 years and 10 months. The defense, on the other hand, wants to achieve a conviction for intentional killing, the accused is said to go to prison in addition to addiction therapy. The court chose a punishment that is only slightly less than the public prosecutor’s request.

The criminal court speaks satisfaction payments to the victim family. This was requested by her lawyer. The widow, CHF 50,000 each, should come to the victim’s two sons.
