The reimbursement of medications is still too narrow in various diseases, including diabetes. Currently, Latvia is one of the last European countries where adults with type 1 diabetes are not available with state -funded glucose -level determination devices, not to mention insulin pumps. Whether and to what extent this group of patients will receive state aid in the future, there is no clear answer to the Ministry of Health (MoE) – it depends on the funding available. However, it is likely that it will first reach the pregnant women, as it is also the result of a demographic activation plan.

The problem of obesity needs to be addressed

The number of diabetes patients is growing, and the disease brings with various complications, both the heart, the kidneys and the eye. The condition is largely facilitated by new drugs-GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors (they improve glucose levels). They are recommended for use in diabetics, regardless of control indicators – even those with serious cardiovascular complications.
