Autism? What brings the diagnosis in adulthood
Spontaneous plan changes are the horror for you? Are you permanently thinking of being somehow different – especially in interaction with other people? Light light, noises, smells, touches quickly ensure a feeling of overstimulation? All of this can indicate an autism spectrum disorder (ASA). The word « spectrum » shows that the forms are sometimes very different from person to person.
Autism is caused by an innate developmental disorder in the brain, according to the portal « Gesund.bund.de ». It is far from being recognized in childhood. In adulthood, however, the symptoms are often more subtle. This has a certain reason: « Many develop strategies to adapt, » explains Prof. Petra Scienter from the Bad Saulgau acute clinic. So many women with autism learned to master social situations early on through imitation.
The diagnosis often begins with a process of self -reflection that throws a new light on problems in the past.
This suppression of certain characteristics so as not to attract attention is called « masking » (English for masking). And it is exhausting for those affected: « Since adaptation to social expectations costs a lot of energy, there is an increased risk of exhaustion and burn-out, » says Scorer, the specialist in psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine.
So what to do if you have the feeling that the stimulus filters of your own brain are different from the many of other people? If communication with others and social situations generally only seem difficult? There are good reasons to initiate a diagnosis – no matter what age.
Extensive relief
Specialists in psychiatry and psychotherapy or psychotherapists can make a diagnosis. The basis for this is conversations and certain tests. In the end, the sometimes months of waiting for an appointment usually pays off: « For many, the diagnosis is a turning point, » said Prof. Petra. A process of self -reflection often begins, which throws a new light on problems in the past. At best, autistic people can take self -accusations that they have made their lives – this brings relief.
Another benefit: A diagnosis creates access to help that make everyday life easier. « A central building block is behavioral therapy that helps to cope with social and organizational difficulties, » said Petra. « For example, if you have problems starting talks or conduct small talk, you can practice discussion in the therapy and to interpret social signals. » So -called psychoeducative programs can also help those affected. There you will learn more about autism and how you can use your own strengths more specifically.
