Austria has been again Strom exportland again since 2009 – Diepresse.com
The production of renewable energies was exceptionally high in 2024. As a result, the networks always came across capacity limits.
Vienna. According to the transmission system operator Austria Power Grid (APG), Austria was the first time since 2009 with 4747 gigawatt hours (GWH) to become an electricity export country. The massive expansion of the photovoltaic systems and high yields from running hydropower were responsible for this. Austria was able to export electricity abroad on 243 days.
According to APG, there was an exceptionally high production in renewable energies, which rose by 14.4 percent compared to 2023 to 57,713 GWh. However, as much excess sun and wind power than ever had to be transported from the northeast to the pumped storage power plants in the west. « We are increasingly reaching the capacity limits of the networks, so that renewable production had to be reduced on numerous days, » acknowledged APG board spokesman Gerhard Christiner in a broadcast.
In cases with high consumption with low renewable harvest, on the other hand, it is « always necessary to have gas power plants starting to secure domestic power supply, » said Christiner. « With a powerful power grid and good international networking, such periods could also be better compensated for by importing renewables from abroad. » (APA)
