Attitude to learning second and the contribution of parents more

The attitude towards learning is considerably different in Estonia than in this country, and then Icelandic parents seem to be less in their children’s learning than Estonian.

May be there to be found at least part of the explanation of that that Icelandic young people are less in education?

The Estonian education system is in many ways remarkable. Not only for the fact that they have been the leader of young people who have been constantly excelled in PISA surveys in recent years.

Only 30 years have passed since the education system was mostly independent from what was in the old Soviet Union, but to this day the system is partly Russian and therefore in itself still at a level of transformation.

A journalist sat down in the days with Kristina Kalla, Estonia’s Minister of Education, with a view to trying to find out what Eistar was doing in education that Icelanders may not be doing.

Education social lever

It is believed to be at home. Kalas says the conditions of Estonian families are not necessarily worse than families in other European countries. The reason why guys there put more efforts than kids elsewhere is not their efforts to get rid of bad situations.

The minister, however, says that education has always been considered a social lever in Estonia. The testicles that they need to be educated to become something.

Could this be part of the explanation for the fact that Icelandic young people are less in education – the attitude towards learning?

Former Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir at an international summit on teachers’ affairs, ISTP, but Kristina Kallas was in Iceland in connection with the meeting.

« I can be pantsless »

Kallas says that for a long time Estonian has thought that if people get their children through their studies, they will go well and even better than their parents.

« This attitude has strong societal roots. People put a lot of effort into the education of their children. At that time it was a son, but this is an old saying so now it is of course both. «

In fact, the minister says that behind good results in the PISA surveys, the contribution of parents is considerable.

Perhaps there is another explanation for that That Icelandic young people are less in education – parents do not give themselves time to be present in their children’s education.

The education has the winnings

We discuss the temptation of young people who may prefer to go to the labor market immediately after elementary school than to go to college. Get paid every month because it costs to be young people in the West.

Kallas certainly says it is true that in the short term, young people have more to go into the labor market as soon as possible, but in the long run, research shows that education wins.

« The educated people have more life expectancy, have a greater likelihood of being longer in good health, their health costs are lower and in the long run they have higher incomes. »

She says that income is steadily increasing throughout the career while those who go immediately work, for example, in construction or in the retail sector also increases their income through the career, but then about fifty work energy will decrease and the people may work fewer time a week in the construction area.

The people lose their ability to study and therefore it is difficult to re -train it at this age.

Extend the compulsory school

« Of course, it is difficult to explain this to 16 -year -olds, so we decided in Estonia’s advice to extend the compulsory schooling to the age of 18. Then we prevent many students from quitting compulsory school. »

The minister says the problem has especially turned to boys who wanted to go to the labor market.

« We also need to find out the problem that about 70% of university students are women. Women then become too educated and look less at men who are less educated that create a certain demographic problem.

We need to get boys through college and then through the university and equalize this proportion. «
