At least 340 candidate lists / days have been submitted to the municipal elections
As the CEC pointed out to LETA, given that the information is still being collected, the number of lists submitted could be higher.
In all Latvian municipalities this year, 731 members should be elected. The number of candidates registered so far reaches 5,975, which means that there is 8.1 candidates per mandate.
Most candidates – 61.4% or 3671 – are men. The average age of candidates is 47.4 years. The oldest candidate is 88 years old and the youngest is 18.
Almost 70% of those in the election are higher education. 81% of candidates were pointed out by « Latvian » or « Latvian » as their nationality. At the same time, a tenth of candidates have not discovered their nationality.
The information available on the CEC website indicates that a total of 16 municipal election candidates have been submitted in Riga.
Competition for deputies in the capital city council this year will be higher than in extraordinary elections of the 2020 municipalities. This year, 743 candidates are fighting for mandates, but five years ago there were 707 candidates on 15 lists.
After registering the lists, the CEC shall verify the candidates’ compliance with the law. After receiving the opinions of the responsible authorities, it will be clear whether any candidate can be deleted from the lists.
It has been previously reported that the submission of candidate lists is on April 8.
As the candidate lists approached, the applicants’ activity had increased, the State Digital Development Agency (VDAA) told LETA on Monday.
By Monday afternoon, 318 candidates were submitted, but more than 60 lists were submitted on Monday.
The CEC had called on political forces to not postpone lists for the last minute. This call was also joined by the VDAA, which is the maintainer of the digital platform of the election and the technical support provider for activities on the portal.
Voters can change the constituency to the municipality, which owns the property by May 29. This can be done at any municipal declaration authority or the E-Service of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs « Voter Data Management ».
Municipal elections will take place in early June.
