At least 23 people died in the northeast of Congo this week
The insurgents are connected to the Islamic State.
Kinshasa. The Group of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) linked to the Islamic State killed at least 23 people this week, and about 20 others captured in the northeast of the Congo Democratic Republic (KDR), they said local sources for AFP.
ADF attacks occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday in the province of ituri at the Uganda border.
« Overall, these insurgents executed 23 people in the villages Matolo and Samboko, told AFP coordinator of one of the main organizations of civil society in Mambasa. At the same time, he recalled that the number of victims is preliminary.
According to the coordinator, the group caught at least 20 civilians « including the son of the chief of the village of Matolo ». Humanitarian groups have confirmed these figures and also expect an increase.
Among the victims were mostly farmers working in the fields, the local police chief explained.
The Allied Democratic Forces, which consist of former Ugandan insurgents, have settled in the northeast of the KDR since the mid -1990s. They killed thousands of civilians there despite the deployment of the Uganda army and the Congo Armed Forces, writes AFP.
At the end of 2021, Uganda and KDR started a joint military operation against ADF, while not yet able to stop their activities. According to the coordinator, however, this was the first ADF attack since the beginning of the year.
