At least 113 killed in a nightclub accident in the Dominican Republic
At least 113 people were killed and more than 150 injured after a roof crashed into a nightclub in the Dominican Dominican capital, officials, officials said.
The victims include the Governor of the Province and a former Big League baseball, Octavio Dotel. Dotel, 51, died on his way to hospital after being pulled out of the rubble.
The incident happened early in the morning at a concert by popular singer Ruby Perez at the Jet Set nightclub. He is among the dead in the incident, his manager said.
Hundreds of people were inside, and about 400 rescuers are still searching for survivors. It is feared that the death toll will be further increased.
The director of the Emergency Operations Center, Juan Manuel Mendez, said he hoped many of the trapped under the collapsed roof are still alive.
Jet Set is a popular nightclub in Santo Domingo, which regularly holds concerts on Monday night. Politicians, athletes and other prominent figures attended.
The victims include Cruz, Governor of the Monte Christie Province, President Luis Abbadader said. She was the sister of former baseball player Nelson Cruz, a seven-time All-Star in the baseball league.
One of Ruby Perez’s band members told local media that the club was full when the collapse happened « around 1pm ».
