Scientists recalled the orbit of 2024 YR4 asteroids, once seen as a threat to the world. According to new data, the probability of the asteroid hit the Moon in 2032 is 4.3 percent.
The possibility of a space rock called 2024 YR4, which was once seen as a potential threat to the world, is considered by scientists in 2032.
Discovered in December 2024 and estimated to be 53-67 meters wide, Asteroid was re-observed by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.
New Calculation: The Target is not the world, but the moon
A team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory has recalculated the orbit of the asteroid with new data from WebB telescope.
This new calculation eliminated the risk of asteroids to hit the Earth, while in 2032 the probability of hitting the Moon increased from 3.8 percent to 4.3 percent.
When it was first discovered, this change in the route of asteroids, which is more likely to hit the Earth, has eliminated concerns about our planet. The eyes are now turned into a possible moon collision.
Experts emphasize that even if 2024 YR4 hit the Moon in 2032, it will not affect the security of the world and will not make a significant change in the orbit of the Moon. Therefore, there is no concern.
On the contrary, this possible collision is seen as a scientifically rare opportunity. If the collision occurs, scientists will be able to observe a real asteroid-moon collision from the first hand. This will provide valuable data for future planet defense strategies.
