The 36-year-old Romanian Marian Salabin was found guilty of manslaughter on the 36-year-old Yunus Calik in 2021 in Aalst. The jury of the Ghent court of Assisen decided that on Wednesday evening.
Salabin gave the victim a staircase in his face during a street quarrel, causing the man to fall back on his mind and died in the hospital four days later.
The facts took place in the night from 19 to 20 November 2021 in the Lange Zoutstraat in Aalst. Around 1.45 am an intervention team of the local police in the entertainment district was approached by two girls who had seen a man lying on the ground. The agents found that Yunus Calik had a head wound and was no longer conscious. The emergency services brought the man to the hospital in a critical condition, but he died of his injuries on 24 November.
The law doctor would later conclude that his death was the result of a serious skull and brain trauma. Different witnesses stated that Calik, who was out with friends, had got a staircase against the head after a short argument with a group of men. Marian Salabin was identified as a suspect based on the statements and with camera images, among other things. He first claimed that one of his friends had given Calik a blow, but in later interrogations he confessed that he had given the victim a taekwondotrap in the face, which had fallen with his back of the paving stones.
