Asselborn fears uncontrollable location in the Middle East
Former Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn (LSAP) is concerned about the latest escalations between Israel and Iran. There is a risk of expanding the conflict: « We have to hope that there is no explosion that can no longer be controlled », said Asselborn on Monday morning at RTL.
It can be expected that Israel’s head of government Benjamin Netanyahu doesn’t just want to destroy the Iranian nuclear program: « Netanyahu wants more, he wants regime change. » However, the experience with forced regime changes of the past decades, for example in the case of Iraq or Libya, are disastrous. Israel is militarily superior, but peace can only be found through negotiations.
Asselborn also referred to the situation in Gaza, where Israeli warfare was cruel. The war there should have ended long ago.

In addition, Aslandelborn defended itself against the accusation that in his reign there was never a Palestine recognition as a state. « In the time I was in the government, there was no majority to recognize Palestine. » This was neither possible with the CSV nor with the DP. When countries such as Spain and Ireland Palestine recognized in spring 2024, it was a distorted time window: « We should have been there. »
