Asenath Amanuel found the summer job through a collaboration between the Labor Market Administration and the Stockholm Business Region.

On a sunny Friday afternoon, the archipelago boat M/S Östanå 1 has just arrived at the quay at Strandvägen in Stockholm. Although the real high season has not yet found the sex of tourists who step ashore already long – and the screaming gulls that revolve around the boats at Nybroviken receive competition from the guests’ conversations in English, German and Italian.

For 20-year-old Asenath Amanuel is the archipelago’s time -typical interior, with its shiny wooden panels and strengthened tablecloths in the dining room, familiar. Already last summer she worked at the boat’s cafe, where guests can buy sandwiches, coffee and sweets during the journey, and this year it is time to board again.

The best thing about the job is contact with the guests, says Asenath Amanuel.

– It’s so fun to meet all the tourists who go with us – and to meet new people every day. And it is great fun to test new things and to collaborate with others. The cohesion here is very nice, she says.

Asenath Amanuel got the job on the classic archipelago boat through a collaboration that was launched in 2021 between the Labor Market Administration and the Stockholm Business Region. Through the project, young people between the ages of 16-19 who are looking for summer jobs through Stockholm City’s holiday job portal have the opportunity to work for various actors in the capital’s visitor industry for three weeks.

During the three The weeks the salary is paid by the City of Stockholm, and according to Åsa Lundgren, project coordinator at the Stockholm Business Region, the collaboration has fallen well.

– Last year, around 30 young people worked for three weeks in different places in the hospitality industry. 37 percent of these were then allowed to continue working in their workplaces after their weeks « in the city’s service », while 30 percent received great grades and was asked to apply directly to employers next season, she says.

This year has 40 young people within the framework of the project were given the opportunity to work on, in addition to M/S Östanå 1, including Gröna Lund, Junibacken and Skansen.

Åsa Lundgren emphasizes that the summer jobs are certainly real jobs – but that they do not replace planned seasonal staff, but is a complement to the business.

– The young people should be seen as a kind of « extra hands ». The companies get no money for the project, but see it as a chance to teach the young people – so that when the three weeks are over, they can connect them for future jobs, she says.

In Asenth Amanuel Fall led last summer’s job at M/S Östanå 1 to the fact that this year she was contacted by her former employer this year already in January, who offered a job in the coming summer. She believes that the collaboration project was an important entrance to the labor market.

– For me it was difficult to find jobs- before I got this I would probably have applied between 50-70 part-time and extra jobs. And it was a great relief when my old employer already heard in January, she says and continues:

– If they had not contacted me, I would have heard from you to see what the situation looked like, but it was nice not to have to go through that process.

At M/S Östanå 1, it starts to contract for a new departure. In the afternoon sun, a shock tourists stomp it impatiently around the quay waiting to get on board to be guided around Stockholm’s inner archipelago for a couple of hours.

In front of the rich archipelago boat M/S Östanå, the queue is long before another trip in Stockholm's inner archipelago.

Asenath Amanuel, who usually studies for a socio -economist, is getting ready to go on one of the season’s first pass in the cafe.

On the question What to think about when looking for a summer job, she means that it is important to emphasize that you are ready to learn new things in the workplace.

– It is also good to write in the application that you are both open and social, while being disciplined. And it is important that you really read through the ad properly, so that you know what the job is all about, she says and adds:

– And chatter your parents at you to apply for summer jobs, so do it.
