Artificial intelligence in the federal administration: BUND presents strategy
Technological change
« Running danger to be left behind »: National Councilor and the federal government smell great opportunities for artificial intelligence
The federal administration also wants to use AI. That is why the Federal Chancellery has set principles for responsible commitment. The Basel National Councilor Katja Christ meanwhile calls for a national fundamental discussion and hopes not to be too late.
The federal government has developed a strategy so that employees of the federal administration use artificial intelligence efficiently and responsibly.
« Artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally changing the world, » the Federal Council writes in a media release on Friday. The AI also influences many areas of responsibility at the federal administration. In Bundesbern, one hopes in particular that AI systems can help to make administrative processes more efficient.
In order to use AI sensory and responsibly, the Federal Chancellery has drawn up a strategy, but this has only defined general foundations. Accordingly, the federal government should orientate itself on three fields of action:
- Using training, employees of the administration should build up skills in order to be able to use AI systems.
- AI systems should be used for the common good. Internal requirements are intended to ensure that the use is legally compliant and according to ethical standards.
- The federal government hopes for time and cost savings thanks to AI. Capacity of human employees should be used more suitable by decreasing the AI routine work.
A implementation plan for these strategic goals should be available by the end of this year. The state government is also currently working on the regulation of AI in the rest of Switzerland. For this purpose, the federal government presented an interpretation regulations at the beginning of February 2025 and announced, among other things, that Switzerland is supposed to take over the European Coram's AI conventions.
AI is also a big topic in parliament
The question of the best possible handling of this technological revolution is also concerned with the parliament. On Thursday the Council of States waved one Motion Through that wants to better protect intellectual property from unauthorized use by AI. During the spring session, twelve new advances were also submitted on this topic.
One of them comes from Baselin Katja Christ (GLP). In it, the National Councilor calls for a nationwide strategy for dealing with AI. The Federal Council's interpretation order is primarily about legislation. She says: « AI carries risks, yes – but above all enormous opportunities. » That is the focus of her motion.
The Basel National Councilor Katja Christ (GLP)
According to Christ, Switzerland still lacks a specific vision. «As with traffic planning – we have to ask ourselves: Where do we want to stand in ten or twenty years? If we do not act, we run the risk of being left behind. » This is how their motion provides that Switzerland should receive a national AI competence center, formulate strategic goals to strengthen research and innovation and develop a plan for promoting talent and acquisition.
Pre -aspects of aspects of sustainability, ethics and knowledge transfer in the field of AI were also submitted. Christ hopes that your principle of fundamental will not come too late: «Before we regulate AI, we have to know where to go. A patchwork doesn't help us. » She explains the time for her motion in such a way that a lot has changed since the last winter session – not least the geopolitical weather situation. Christ says: «AI is there. The question is whether we are shaped or driven. I would like to take advantage of the chances without ignoring the risks. »
