Around every seventh pays more than half a monthly wage for rent

According to a survey, 15 percent of people in Germany are on it every month more than half of their net wages for rent. Three percent of the respondents even pay more than 70 percent for rent. This was the result of a representative survey by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency. More than 4,000 people took part, almost 2400 of them were tenants.

The other end of the scale was also queried: only 8 percent of people spend less than 20 percent of their net wages for rent. Almost half of the respondents pay between 20 and 39 percent for rent. Another 17 percent turn between 40 and 49 percent of their monthly net wages for rent.

Few people live cramped

The survey also shows that people in Germany live quite generously on average. More than half of the tenants surveyed (53 percent) replied that there were more rooms than people in their apartment. Another 37 percent stated that in the apartment, which she rented with her family, for example, a room came into mathematically in every resident. Only six percent said there were fewer rooms than people. Three percent made no statement. Living relationships are considered cramped when there are fewer rooms as residents.

Even more generous are the living conditions among the people who have the apartment in which they live. Three quarters of them (76 percent) stated that there were more rooms than residents. Most of them even had more than humans over two rooms.

Lack of living space in some population groups

However, the scissors diverge far. Other surveys show that around every ninth in Germany has to cope with cramped living conditions. According to numbers from the European Statistics Office Eurostat, 11.5 percent of people in Germany lived in an overcrowded apartment last year.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, particularly single parents and their children, people at risk of poverty and adults with a foreign passport were affected by cramped living conditions. In addition, people in cities suffered around three times as often from a lack of living space as residents of rural areas.
