Armenian Prime Minister hopes to sign a peace agreement with Azerbaijan by the end of 2025

Armenian Prime Minister Nicol Pashinyan announced Yerevan’s readiness to conclude a peace agreement with Baku by the end of 2025 and dissolve the negotiation structures created in the format of the OSCE Minsk Group.

He noted that some Azerbaijani circles call about 60% of the sovereign territory of Armenia « Western Azerbaijan », which, he said, is a territorial claim to Armenia.
« Our approach is to sign a peace agreement and at the same time dissolve these mechanisms. I think we should try to implement all this by the end of this year, » the Armenian Prime Minister said.
Pashinyan also said that Armenia was ready to quickly continue negotiations with Azerbaijan to sign and ratify the agreement.
Prehistory:
- Azerbaijan and Armenia were actually in a state of war after declaring independence more than 30 years ago, and in 2020 and 2023, Azerbaijan returned control over Nagorny Karabakh as a result of hostilities.
- In March Armenia and Azerbaijan simultaneously announced approval of the text of the peace treaty. But after that Baku put forward a number of requirements, including changes to the Armenian Constitution before signing the document.
