Are the new contracts retroactive?
On Tuesday evening, contracts were finally reached between teachers, state and local authorities and were subsequently canceled. The agreements were reached after amendments were made to the prerequisites that had been passed.
As stated in the news, teachers immediately receive an increase of 8% and the contract is valid from June 1 last year to the end of March 2028, or for four years. It has often been pointed out that the state approves the retroactivity of contracts far back in time, but how is it in this case?
With the previous interior proposal submitted by Ástráður Haraldsson, the state mediator submitted in November, it was agreed that teachers would receive one -time payment of a 3.95% increase from 1 June. The 8% increase that is currently agreed upon from February 1st.

Agreed on a lump sum payment in November
In November, when the teachers' strikes were postponed until January with the previous interior proposal of a mediator, it was agreed that teachers would receive one -time payment of a 3.95% increase in salary from June 1 when contracts were vacant.
Inga Rún Ólafsdóttir, chairman of the negotiating committee of the Union of Local Authorities, confirms in a conversation with mbl.is that the increase that was now approved by 8% will reach from February 1, and therefore no one will be a one -time payment for that month than that month, but had already been finalized.
