ArcelorMittal announces a new plan to remove several hundred posts in seven sites in northern France – Liberation

The steel giant ArcelorMittal go again reduce its workforce in France. The steelmaker will delete positions in seven sites in the north of the country. Management announced on Wednesday, April 23, that this decision was made due to the lack of competitiveness of steel in Europe and a transfer to India from certain support functions of all its European sites.

The total number of people dismissed on the DunkirkFlorange, Basse-Indre, Mardyck, Mouzon, Desvres and Montaire, which form the « north cluster » of ArcelorMittal France, was not specified, but it could amount to some 600 positions, AFP learned from another source close to the file. The seven factories employ some 7,100 employees in total.

« It’s the hecatombe », reacted Gaétan Lecocq, secretary general of the CGT ArcelorMittal in Dunkirk, who assured that « All sites » from the north of France were affected by these « Hundreds of job cuts ». “We’re not going to let ourselves die like that. We are in the North, we are metallos, we are not going to let ourselves be done ”, warned the union representative, adding being « As a crisis meeting since the start of the afternoon ». « From tomorrow, we do the factories to tow », he announced.

Following with a historic steel crisis in Europe, ArcelorMittal had already declared last February that he was considering the relocation of some of his support activities from Europe to India. Wednesday afternoon, a business social committee was underway for the France part, at the French headquarters of Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis), and another, at European level, in Luxembourg. ArcelorMittal, the second world steelmaker, must announce his results for the first quarter of 2025 on Wednesday, April 30.

This last announcement of deletion of posts occurs while the group already provides for the closure Reims and Denain sites who employ 135 people. Three weeks later, ArcelorMittal had also expressed another social plan in Strasbourg and Valence with 28 layoffs.
