Arcadia: Priests broke the monastery of Klivokas – grabbed the value of the Virgin Mary’s image

The priests broke into the early morning of May Day the Holy Monastery of Klivokas in Gortynia, Arcadia and removed great value from the icon of Our Lady.

The perpetrators violated the monastery’s iron door and entered the catholicon, where, after causing damage, they removed the gold and silver tombs in the picture.

Nuns perceived the theft

However, the perpetrators did not stole the image of the Virgin Mary himself.

The incident was realized by the nuns, who immediately alerted the President of the Community of Kontovazaine, Vassilis Gouvi.

He informed the Trophy Police Department, which is conducting an investigation into the identification of the perpetrators.

The monastery is located in a high and rough spot, also known as the « meteor » of Gortynia and is about 15 minutes from the village.

Residents of the area, speaking to ilialive.gr, said that despite the difficulty of access, the perpetrators arrived at the monastery, from the 140 steps that one must climb to reach the cave of Our Lady.

Kontovazaina President Vassilis Gouvis said in statements to ilialive.gr that the perpetrators climbed the stairs and with some kind of lottery lifted the heavy metal door of the monastery, managing to pass down to enter.

On the day of the theft, the abbot of Gerontissa Seraphimia was alone and in the night he did not realize the entrance of the priests into the monastery. Only in the morning he saw what had happened from the inconvenience to the space and the missing from the image of the Virgin Mary.

Police in the area have been informed of the incident, the marking has received fingerprints, and significant information is expected to provide videos from security cameras, seeking the identity of the sacred perpetrators.
