Applies to all Danish drivers over 70 years of age

Since 2017, there has been no requirement in Denmark for a medical certificate or vision test when renewing a driver’s license for older motorists.

« This means that people over the age of 70 can renew their driver’s license without any mandatory health check.

« Therefore, it is positive that the EU is currently updating driver’s license directives that open up the possibility for Member States to introduce mandatory sight test requirements. This gives Denmark an obvious opportunity to introduce a scheme that could benefit road safety. »

Regular vision test for motorists over 70

There is now an important political job ahead of us, Per Michael Larsen writes.

« It requires both attention and quick action if we are to ensure that Danish roads are safe – even as more motorists grow older. »

And in that regard, he has a very specific proposal.

« To strengthen road safety, it is optimal that requirements are introduced for motorists over 70 years to undergo a health check, including a vision test of an optician or ophthalmologist at least every five years. It will not only make the roads safer but also allow the elderly to detect visual problems early and get the necessary treatment, » he writes, adding:

« I fully understand that a requirement for vision testing can be perceived as stigmatizing. Many elderly people want to maintain their independence, and the ability to drive is often closely linked to freedom and mobility. It just should not entail a potential risk of human life. In many cases, a few glasses or treatment of vision problems will fortunately mean that drivers can continue to drive safely and properly – for the benefit of both themselves. »
