With the summer approaching, they want to offer information with a prevention campaign about the safe use of these products and about what to do if something goes wrong, they report in a press release on Monday.
Last year, in 2024, we received 275 calls at the Antigifcentrum about exposure to maintenance products for swimming pools, « says Patrick De Cock, spokesperson for the Antigifcentrum. » In total there were 307 victims, including 112 children. «
It is therefore called upon to be careful with the products and not to use them in the presence of children. Products are best stored in their original packaging, in a cool and dry place outside the reach of children.
With inhalation of chlorine vapors, which, for example, are released when chlorine comes into contact with an acid, it is best to immediately look up fresh air. If the breathing difficulties are worsening, accompanied by difficulty in breathing deep or not reducing within a few hours, a doctor must be consulted.
Rinse
With local contact with the skin or eyes, which can cause severe irritation or chemical burns, it is important to rinse immediately and for a long time with lukewarm water (15 minutes). If the complaints persist, it is best to contact the doctor.
With oral intake of chlorine, especially with children who accidentally swallow granulate or bite a chlorine tablet, you should not let the victim vomit, to avoid second contact with the esophagus. « Let the victim drink a few sips of water and follow the symptoms during the next four hours. If there is pain, trouble breathing, vomiting a lot, excessive saliva production or swelling or injuries in the mouth, then go to the hospital, » is the advice.
In case of poisoning, the Antigifcentrum can be reached 24/7 on the free number 070/245 245.
