Anthem for freedom and human dignity. Beethovena Opera Fidelio – live from New York / Day

Fidelio is Beethoven's only opera, its premiere in the final version of Vienna in 1814 (1805 in Vienna's opera premiered as Leonora). This work is called an anthem for freedom and human dignity. Fidelio The action takes place in Spain, near Seville, at the end of the 18th century, during political coups after the Great French Revolution. Beethoven's opera is believed to be beautiful, but not ideal as a music theater work – Fidelio The political idealism expressed is more admirable than a coexistence, and the heroes are more archetypes than humanly credible characters.

The German Director Climma (1941-2023) created Fidelio The production has been in the repertoire of the Metropolitan Opera since 2000. In the show, the story develops in an indefinite era, with details that have been borrowed from the repressive regimes of the 20th century history and vote with modern reality.

Fidelio The renewal of New York is gathered by soloists stars, and they together with conductor Susanna Melki at the metropolitan opera orchestra and the choir console creates almost the perfect interpretation of this opera. Leonor is portrayed by Norwegian soprano Līse Davidsen, who has gained worldwide fame as an interpreter of the opticom of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Critics write that Līse Davidsen was born to portray heroes like this Beethoven's opera. Leonora risks life and pretends to be a man named Fidelio to save his husband Florestan from tyranny shackles, who is arrested for his political views.

After the show Fidelio Līse Davidsen will take a break in her career as she is about to become a mother – she is waiting for twins. The artist plans to return on stage after a year – in the spring of 2026, she will sing Wagner in New York Tristan and isoles in a new production.

The British tenor David Bats-Filip is convincing in the image of Leonor's husband Florestan. He deals brightly with this difficult party, demonstrating the dramatic courage of the hero and the ardent tirelessness. Polish bass baritone Thomas Konečnyi is vividly embodied in the role of the villain, Don Pizarro, the head of the prison. In this production, he is a tyrant who responds in front of a higher despotic power and is afraid of it.

The legendary German bass René Pape, who sang twenty -five years ago at the premiere of the production, hears the prison monitor. Rock daughter Marseille, who falls in love with Fidelio, without realizing it is a woman, is portrayed by the subtle Chinese soprano jina fan. The German tenor Magnus Dietrich is played by Jackino in prison. Minister Don Fernando sings Danish bass Stephen Millings.

The production is also effective and alarming because Bethoven's solemn, uplifting finals, director Jirgen Flimate turn into a warning. « The police who have just listened to Pizarro are now rejoicing at the death penalty, while the public is threatening the knives in the air. Jirgen Flimate – a German born during World War II – knew that tyrants were dangerous, but people who are. The New York Times Review.
