Antarctic glaciers have revealed something unusual. A huge predator under ice
During the exploration of this virgin area, an extremely rare and mysterious creature was registered – a giant disc from the species of Stygiomedus Gigantea. An animal, often called « gigantic phantom jelly »reaches impressive sizes – the diameter of its bell reaches over a meter, and the shoulders can be up to 10 m long. Although the creation is colloquially called jellyfish, this term is only described by one of the development stages of the album.
An unusual deep predator discovered in the glacier
Stygiomedus Gigantea is an extremely rare resident 6,000 m. The nickname of « giant phantom jelly » owes its semi -transparency and the ability to « disappear » in dark waters. Researchers suppose that album can even take red color under the influence of light, which further emphasizes its uniqueness.
The discovery was made during the BatySkaf Subastian mission, which immersed to a depth of 1300 m to examine a newly exposed sea environment. The region turned out to be rich in life – the crew found numerous ukwals, sponges, cephalopods and crustaceans. However, it was the appearance of the mysterious album that aroused the greatest interest of researchers.
Until now, Stygiomedus Gigantea was observed only in Antarctic waters and at depths reaching up to 280 m, although its actual range of occurrence can be much wider. Despite its impressive sizes, he is not the largest known representative of the album – the record belongs to feston bullshit From the North Atlantic, which paddles can reach up to 30 m long.
New data collected during this expedition can significantly expand the knowledge of the mysterious life of deep paddles, whose existence still remains largely unknown.
